Finding Your Design Speciality

At the beginning of my career, I had a difficult time narrowing down my speciality because I enjoyed learning about every discipline. I was also worried about closing doors. The good news, you can always change your mind. Here are the ways I experimented with different design roles.

Hack Design is a great introduction to most design skills from typography to product design. Whenever I meet someone who is interested in design, but doesn't know where to start, I recommend the 50 lesson course.  It's a low investment for a high reward. Did I also mention it's free?

Jessica Hische, Creative Mornings

Creative Mornings is a community based event for creatives to teach and learn from other professionals . Starting off in design, I made a habit of listening to a talk a day. Most speakers cover the basics. I plan on writing a separate post dedicated to talks. Meanwhile,  here is one of my favorite talks from modern lettering pioneer,  Jessica Hische

In addition to doing a program like Hack Design, I suggest investing in an online learning platform like Lynda, Skillshare, and Udacity. Go down the rabbit hole and absorb as many classes as you can in a month or two.

The best way to figure out what you like is to do it. Make personal projects, offer help to family and friends. You can like the idea of something more then the actual work. With time, you'll know what you find fulfilling and interesting. And it's okay if that changes over time.
